Regular Carpet Care In Somerset

Carpet fibres are designed to hide soil and reflect light. Consequently, soil in carpet is not as visible as it is on smooth flooring where soil remains on the surface and is easily seen. The ability of today’s carpet fibres to hide soiling is a positive feature for most consumers. However, the lack of apparent soiling does not eliminate the need for regular cleaning. Soil can damage the fibres permanently if allowed to remain in the pile.

Even with carpet’s ability to resist soiling and stains, a regular maintenance program extends the life and appearance of your carpet. Specific carpet care information may be available from your carpet dealer, carpet manufacturer or fibre producer.

The WOOLSAFE Organisation, other leading industry bodies and most carpet mills recommend that carpet and rugs are cleaned at least once a year. Check out “woolsafe tv” on “you tube” for spot and stain removal tips

we recommend that a protective treatment be applied to high traffic areas on wool carpets to slow down soiling and although not bullet proof gives you more time to blot up spills. Ask Sheen Services your only local “Woolsafe” service provider serving Wells, Shepton Mallet and surrounding areas about the benefits of applying a carpet protector.

Vacuuming – Why it’s important

Whether you’re cleaning out the spare room or just tidying up around the house, it is important that dirt and dust are removed, not simply moved around or thrown back into the breathing zone. Properly vacuuming is the easier and most effective way to keep your carpet clean. It may be surprising, but something as simple as regular vacuuming can also have the largest impact on the cleanliness of your home and the air you breath.

Sheen services recommend vacuuming areas often that receive the most traffic, such as hallways, stairs and exterior entry ways in the home. Ideally, vacuum all the floor coverings a minimum of once a week, and the high traffic areas more often, based on the usage. If you have pets, you may need to vacuum some areas daily. Removing loose soil while it remains on the carpet’s surface is important so that it is not walked into the carpet pile.

Use a vacuum cleaner that effectively removes soil and minimises generating dust from the filter and around the machine while keeping the carpet looking good. Because of the impact of vacuum cleaners on indoor air, cleaning efficiency can vary significantly, it is important to identify models that clean well and protect the indoor environment.

For maximum effectiveness use a vacuum cleaner with adjustable and rotating brushes that can loosen ground in soil and has a strong enough air flow to penetrate to the backing, removing all particles

Deep Cleaning

Daily vacuuming is the most important cleaning activity, but restorative cleaning must be performed to remove stubborn or embedded soil. Sheen services recommends that carpet be cleaned using restorative cleaning method every 6-12 months before soiling shows. Professional cleaning should be considered before your rug and carpets begin to show soil. Letting carpets and rugs become excessively soiled will make cleaning more difficult and shorten the carpets useful life.

Methods of Cleaning we use

Hot Water Extraction

The most thorough of all the possible cleaning systems. It works like this: a hot water cleaning solution (not unlike the solution you clean your clothes in the washing machine) is fired under high pressure into your carpet – onto the fibres. This detergent cleaning solution is then – almost instantly – sucked up out of your carpet bringing dirt and oils and bacteria with it.

In recent Technical Bulletin Shaw Industries, the worlds largest carpet manufacturer, “recommends the hot water extraction system, which research indicates provides the best capability for cleaning”.

And this isn’t surprising. You see, a twin vacuum, high pressure hot water extraction unit cleans much better because it heats the water to the right temperature – loosens soil and sucks the dirt away at high speed, our process is dry within 2 hours (subject to drying conditions).

Absorbent Pad: (bonnet cleaning)

This method involves a floor polishing buffer machine with a large cotton pad being spun over your carpet. The theory is the spinning motion helps the cotton pad to absorb the dirt from your carpet. This system has its place and has its advantages of being relatively quick to carry out and quick to dry. Its worth noting that effectively the bonnet cleaning system is like trying to use a large cotton towel or mop to rub dirt out of your carpet. Its main use is for maintenance clean on low pile carpets in commercial properties.

Dry, absorbent powder

This is a very simple maintenance cleaning process where a very slightly moist absorbent powder is spread over the carpet. The powder is allowed to dry and then sucked up into a vacuum. Used on delicate carpets and rugs where moisture cannot be used.

Easy care tips for our customers

  • Clean up spills immediately. Spots are like glue…the longer you wait the harder it gets.
  • Blot don’t rub. Use a clean white absorbent cloth (see spotting guide) rubbing may distort fibres and result in stain.
  • Pre-test spot removers. Dab first on a hidden area of carpet or fabric with a white cloth, if the cloth picks up any colour do not use the spot remover.
  • Apply spot remover to cloth first, then blot spot. Repeat as needed until spot is removed.
  • Rinse and blot dry. Wet cloth with clean water and dab the area to remove any spot remover residue. Blot dry with a clean cloth.
